East-west traffic

Traffic crossing the perimeter gets inspected. Traffic between internal systems usually does not.

That imbalance is where attackers spend most of their time, because once inside they are moving sideways rather than in and out. The volume is the obstacle: internal traffic dwarfs perimeter traffic, so inspecting it is expensive. Which is precisely why it remains the least observed part of most estates.
