Encryption in transit

Encryption in transit protects information while it is moving from one place to another, so that anybody who intercepts it in the middle sees nothing useful.

It is the padlock in your browser, and it now covers almost everything. But it protects the journey only. At both ends the data is readable, because it has to be. So it says nothing about whether the place you sent it to looks after it properly, or whether the right people are reading it once it arrives. Safe in transit and safe at the destination are different claims.
