Running untrusted content in a constrained environment limits what it can reach if it turns out to be hostile.

The word covers a wide range of strength, from a browser tab to a separate virtual machine, and the protection varies accordingly. Malware that detects it is being analysed and behaves normally is also common, so a clean result in a sandbox is weaker evidence than it appears.
