Benchmarking

Comparing yourself with peers tells you how unusual you are. It does not tell you whether you are safe.

An entire sector can be under-investing simultaneously, in which case being average is not reassuring. Benchmarks are most useful for arguing about budget and least useful for deciding what is sufficient, which depends on your risk rather than on what everybody else happens to be doing.
