Opportunistic attacks
Most attacks are not aimed at you. They are aimed at anybody reachable and easy.
Scanning the whole internet is cheap, so exposure alone is sufficient to be attacked. That is good news in one sense: ordinary hygiene removes you from the easy pile. It also means "why would anybody target us" is the wrong question, because for most incidents nobody chose you.
