Parsing errors can silently break detections
If the log arrives but is not parsed into the fields your rules expect, the rules stop working and nothing complains.
The data is present, the dashboard shows events flowing, and the detections quietly match nothing. It is one of the most common causes of a SOC that believes it is watching something it is not. Monitoring parsing failures is as important as monitoring log volume, and far less often done.
More on Logging and telemetry
- A log records an observation, not objective truthThe shadow, not the thing
- Central logging reduces local erasure riskIt left before you got there
- Verbose logging can leak secretsEverything, including that
- Retention determines how far back you can investigateThe line only goes back so far
- Telemetry coverage should map to detection questionsPoint it at the question
- High-volume logs can hide high-value eventsBuried by the ordinary
