SCADA

SCADA is the layer that lets people watch and command an industrial process from somewhere else.

Screens showing tank levels, valve positions and line speeds, and the ability to change them. Its significance for security is exactly that: it is the system through which physical things are commanded, so access to it is access to the process. Much of it was designed when the network it sat on was assumed to be closed.
