Threat

A threat is whoever, or whatever, might do you harm. A burglar. A scammer. A burst pipe.

It gets mixed up with two other things, and pulling them apart is genuinely useful. The threat is not the way in, and it is not the mess afterwards. Rain is the threat. The crack in the roof is the way in. The ruined ceiling is the mess. You cannot stop the rain, so knowing which of the three you are actually looking at tells you where you can do something about it.
