Data masking

Masking shows only as much of a value as the task needs. The last four digits, the year of birth, the first part of a postcode.

It reduces how many people ever see the full value, which reduces both the chance of misuse and the impact if a screen is photographed or a log captured. It is a straightforward change that is usually skipped because the interface was built to display whatever the database returned.
