Data loss prevention watches the routes data can leave by, and stops the ones that look like something sensitive going somewhere it should not.

It genuinely catches accidents, which are the majority of incidents. It does considerably less against somebody determined, who has options it does not monitor, and it generates friction and false positives on ordinary work. Useful as a safety net, unconvincing as a barrier.
