Graceful degradation

A system can be designed to shed non-essential function under stress rather than falling over entirely.

Turn off recommendations, disable images, queue the non-urgent work, serve a cached page. The customer gets something reduced instead of nothing. It requires deciding in advance what is essential, which is a business conversation people avoid until it is being had at speed during an outage.
