Safety systems

Safety instrumented systems exist to bring a process to a safe state when something goes wrong. They are the last line before physical harm.

They are deliberately separate from the control system, with their own logic, precisely so that a failure of control does not disable protection. Attacks that target them specifically are among the few that can produce injury rather than disruption, which is why that separation is worth defending as a security boundary and not just a safety one.
