Device locks
Your phone and laptop almost certainly encrypt themselves already. The screen lock is the thing that makes that worth anything.
Encryption on a device protects it while it is locked. Without a PIN, passcode or biometric, the device unlocks itself the moment it is turned on, so the encryption is protecting your data from nobody. This is the least glamorous advice in security and among the most effective: a lock on the screen turns a lost phone from a serious problem into an expensive annoyance. Make it a passcode of decent length rather than four digits, and the annoyance is all that is left.
